Hey Yo:
So, today, I break out of my "Friday Only" shell because a couple of weeks ago, a New Blogging Friend, Jen @ My Skewed View, invited me to play along on her Twisted Mix Tape Tuesday. And, Holy Smokes, I want to play!!! It's all about the Music and I want to try my hand at it. So, thanks for the invite Jen. Jen's Co-Host for these Tuesday Mix Sessions is Kristi @ Finding Ninee... I hope you'll check out their Mix Tape Pages, as well as all the other "Players" too.
This week, Jen has set the 60's as our source of music. It's December 1969 and I am going to make a Mix Tape for a friend. What 5 Songs would I include on my Tape for my friend??? Also, Jen said it's "Dealers Choice." Make your own scenario. So, here goes...
It's all about the Ladies from the Male perspective. For years and years, there has been an "old saying" that goes like this: "You can't live with them, you can't live without them." Now, I'm sure women say the same thing about us guys. Ha!!! I fall into the "Can't live without them" category. So, my Mix Tape for my friend is 60's Music that is about the Ladies, but from both aspects of "with and without."
There are so many choices and it was really hard to narrow this down to just 5
#1: You couldn't be a part of the 60's and not enjoy the Beach Boys. One of their biggest hits was California Girls from April 1965... "And the Southern girls with the way they talk, they knock me out when I'm down there." Well, I'm a Southern Boy. Enjoy... (source)
#2: How many times have you heard this on the radio and you just can't help but sing along. From June 1967, The Turtles with Happy Together... "I can't see me lovin' nobody but you for all my life, When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue for all my life." Sounds like can't live without to me. Enjoy... (source)
#3: For the can't live without side, I have to include this gem... From July 1965, I Got You, Babe from Sonny and Cher. "Then put your little hand in mine, There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb." Enjoy... (source)
#4: Now, to the can't live with side, I'm adding The Classics IV to my Mix Tape and their October 1967 hit, Spooky. "You always keep me guessin', I never seem to know what you are thinking, and if a fella looks at you, it's for sure your little eye will be a winkin', I get confused cause I don't know where I stand, and then you smile and hold my hand." Ha!!! Enjoy... (source)
#5: I just have to include Herb Alpert's rendition of This Guy's In Love With You from June 1968. "I've heard some talk, they say you think I'm fine, yes I'm in love, and what I do to make you mine, tell me now, is it so, don't let me be the last to know, my hands are shaking, don't let my heart be breaking, 'Cause... I need your love." Enjoy... (source)
OK... Bonus round!!! I just can't stop here. I have two more. One of each:
#6: One of my all time favorites. And since this song was released in May of 1969, it made my list. Neil Young with, for me, an awesome guitar song. Down By The River. "Down by the river, I shot my Baby, down by the river, dead, oh, shot her dead." Yep... On the can't live with side. Ha!!! Enjoy... (source)
#7: And now, my OK, for me "Walk off Home Run!!!" It's the 60's. I have to include the Beatles... Released in September 1969, John wrote this regarding his love for Yoko. I Want You (She's so Heavy). This song was also one of the last to be recorded by the Beatles. Very simply: "I want you." Enjoy... (source)
And there is my very first Mix Tape from the 60's. I had a blast!!! Thanks Jen... Thanks for the tee tiny help Linda. Much appreciated. I can only hope I get to come back and Play. And again, please head over to Jen's Place at My Skewed View... for Twisted Mix Tape Tuesday 10 and check out all the music choices from the other participants. Thanks...
Yea Slu!!!! I am so glad you came to play your mix with us! AND love the theme. You did it justice, Happy Together was my "song" with my boyfriend in high school. He was a total punk-rocker and I always thought it was so odd, that he loved that song so much. I figured he'd go all Sid and Nancy on me, but no... The Turtles it was! Thank you so much! Hope to see you again next week. And nice videos ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Thanks, Thanks for the invite... I love this!!! I am going to have so much fun with this over the next few weeks. And I'm excited to check out everybody else.
DeleteHave a great week & Thanks for stopping by, Slu
So Slu I got this great idea. I am making a YouTube playlist with all of the songs from this week's topic on it. I'll let you know when it's done!

I am so excited that you joined our music party! Great, great, great choices, Slu! I'd never heard the Herb Alpert song before so thank you for the introduction to that one. Oh and the fact that you included Neil Young is plain awesome. He's a favorite of mine for sure.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristi... So Happy to be on Board. I love the Herb Alpert song and Neil Young is a huge fave of mine.

Good ones! I love the Spooky tune. I don't remember Cher having a country accent, but it sounds like it in that clip a little bit!
ReplyDeleteThanks... lol: Cher??? I thought so too. A little different. Ha!!!
DeleteThanks so much for stopping by, Slu
I never get tired of any of those songs. Sonny and cher's song gets stuck in my head. Love all old time songs....

Great picks Slu! I know I've been saying this to everybody, but I mean it - I was thisclose to picking "I Got You Babe"! I love that we're all on the same page in one way or another. Beach Boys are quintessential 60s and Neil - love Neil. And you picked Herb Alpert too! I love that! My mom played his stuff all the time and I still love him! Enjoyed your mixtape!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! I really mean that. This was so much fun.
DeleteI Got You Babe & the Herb Alpert tune were a must for me. And Neil is one of my absolute Fave's. So enjoyed.
Thanks for stopping by, Slu
Oooh! #2 and #3 I used as sing-songs with my kids when they were little. Growing them up right :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd I admit to kinda liking #5.
Nice list!

Hey Slu,
ReplyDeleteI just noticed I'm in your blog roll over there on the right - THANK YOU so very much...for some reason, ever since I updated my site, it doesn't work when you link to my home page. Would you do me a huge favor and relink it to my feed? http://feeds.feedburner.com/findingninee
(sorry and thank you and I so so need to do a blog roll and you are so going to be on it. I hope to get to it within the next 2 weeks)
Absolutely... Done within a few minutes.
DeleteWelcome to the home of the raging mind worms! There probably should be a warning on the front: Chance of tunes getting started that cannot be stopped without the application of blunt force or mind altering ingredients.
ReplyDeleteThe breadth of the music brought out by the participants in TMT Tuesday is simply... er breath-taking. Very fun.
Enjoyed the Neil and the Spoonful joints.
Dude...
DeleteYour 1st Paragraph: Too freakin' funny!!!
Your 2nd: Could not agree more!!! I am so glad I found this/was invited. Fun indeed.

Slu,
ReplyDeleteMy mom was a young mom, and I remember her playing ALL of these albums growing up. Vinyl forever, man! Leave it to you to veer off of your Friday posts for the sake of music.
Your saying? I think we use, "Men. Can't live with them, can't kill them." Yeah, I know know. AWESOME. Hahhaaha
Thanks for the smiles, your kind words, and a trip down memory lane :)
