In Just a Few Seconds...

Hey Yo:

So, what can you do in 'Just a few seconds?'  Well...  hang in there with me and let me explain.  I hope this is a "Game Changer" for you.

The Set Up...

I have a Blogging friend, Karen, at Baking in a Tornado...  At various times over the last several weeks, she has posted 3 separate Blogs that seriously got my attention (actually, all her Blogs get my attention).  In order, they are:

It would be so totally COOL if you happened to click on ANY or ALL of Karen's Links.  See for yourself where I am coming from with this Post.  And heck, you might just find something you like to snack on as well.  She's got it covered on every front!!!  A NEW BOOK for crying out loud!!!  Anyway, her 'Series' touched me in a way that, in some small way, led me to perform a:

Random Act(s) of Kindness...
(and it only takes just a few seconds of your time)

Reading her Blog on the subject got me to thinking that I wanted to participate.  I wanted to do something, anything, in the form of a Random Act of Kindness.  As I commented on her Blog, and to give just one example, I recently drove through a Burger Joint for lunch.  While I was at the cashier's window, I informed the cashier to put the tab of the car behind me in line on my tab, that I wanted to pay for the person behind me, unbeknownst to them.  Now, what you have to understand is:  I share this Random Act of Kindness not to brag or boast.  Not at all.  Heck, in all honesty, the amount of money that it cost me was minimal.  A burger with fries & a soda.  It's the act itself, the feeling itself, of such an act, that I am trying to convey.  What a feeling it was, to do something for someone, a stranger, when they least expected it.  I absolutely drove away from the cashier window with a smile on my mug and thinking...  "OK, who is my next Target?"

My Point...

What I am trying to say here is this...  Wouldn't it be so amazing if, each day, or each week, all of us performed a Random Act of Kindness toward someone.  There is so much negativity today.  Spend 5 minutes on Facebook and you'll surely come across a Post of several people arguing over a political or religious opinion with hate spewing from both directions.  Or, in those "debates," one side talks about how 'stupid & ignorant' the "other" side is.  It's just all so nauseating & exhausting.  Watch the news for 5 minutes and you will certainly see some form of hate or racism.  Where is the LOVE these days???  Not just among friends, but where is the LOVE of "Thy Neighbor?"  There are so many ways of performing Random Acts of Kindness and they do not have to include your wallet.  That's the great thing.  Most Acts of Kindness can be totally FREE!!!  They just take a tee-tiny bit of an effort on our part, 'just a few seconds' of our time, and we can more than likely make someone's day...

1:  Show someone your smile & say hi.  They may be having a bad day.
2:  Help someone lift something that might be too heavy for them.
3:  Let someone go first, before yourself, even though you were first in line.
4:  If someone is a few cents short at the cashier, help them out, with a smile.
5:  Help an elderly person that might be having trouble with something.
6:  Instead of not letting that car in and ahead of you, let them in & wave.
7:  At the grocery store, tell that someone in the lot that you'll get their baskart.
8:  At the Mall, go ahead, let 'them' have that parking space that 'was yours.'
9:  If you see someone drop something, pick it up for them, with a smile.

This list could go on and on.  And then, there are certainly ways of helping people when they least expect it through Random Acts of Kindness with your wallet, if that is something that you can afford to do.  And, it doesn't have to be much at all to do something for the someone on the receiving end to absolutely make their day.  So, my hope, with this Post, is that you'll take 'just a few seconds' of your time this week and help put a smile on someone's face, a stranger's face.  I bet you'll feel good doing it.  And it all starts with a Smile.  The Power of a Simple SmileOne Day at a Time!!!  Just sayin'.

In Other News...

House Update:  No Sale!!!  Well, we stood our ground (see Music below).  We said NO to raising our house ONE HALF INCH.  We said NO to paying $2,625 to raise our house ONE HALF INCH.  And, in turn, the Buyer said No Deal.  So, we move forward.  The house is back on the market.  In the week since, only 1 Showing (YIKES!!!)  Fingers crossed...

Houston Texans Football:  Remember last weeks succinct account of their loss???  Well, for this past week...  DITTO!!!

Market Watch:  Nothing like a little "Government Shutdown" to get the Markets reversing their gears.  For the first time in a good while, the Dow fell below 15,000, closing yesterday at 14,996...  Meanwhile, Facebook nudged slightly South, closing yesterday at 49.18.

Good Vibrations...

Music:  Well, standing our ground on the house and losing our Sale means there is only one song I could play this week:  From Tom Petty, give a listen to I Won't Back Down.  Enjoy...  (source

The End:  Another one in the Books.  Thanks for stopping by.  Always know it is much appreciated.  Have a great week.  Hope to see ya back on Mix Tape Tuesday.  Til then...

Be safe, be smart, and always show your Smile...  It's Happy Friday.

adios...  vaya con dios

  1. WOW. I accumulated and posted some wonderful stories, but you gave the whole series life. You went out and did something. And that feeling you got, that's why it's so much fun to do it. It makes us feel good about ourselves, and that's something we all need. Thank you so much for this whole post. I just love it.
And "I Won't Back Down" is one of my favorites.

  2. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a small community with mentors that taught this each day. While most of my mentors have passed, their lessons are still with me. I in turn tried to teach this to my kids and my grandkids. Although we do these things because we want to, the rewards are often overwhelming. Good things come to us from left field sometimes. Ten years ago, I was awarded the Texas Masonic Award for community builder. Did not see it coming and I cried like a baby. It is that good feeling you get that your life wasn't a waste of time. cuz

  5. Yes it feels good to be kind to someone.Last night I was in a line to pay for a couple of things I needed for dinner. I WAS IN A HURRY. The guy in front of me was having trouble with his card going through and he told the cashier that he would pay cash. Here he is going through his pockets not having enough cash. Well I am in a hurry and I say I will pay for him. He looks so shocked that I paid a little over twenty dollars for his stuff. He says He dont know what to say and can he hug me? Awkward... Anyway I finally got out of that store some what embarrassed, but It did feel good to help someone....My daughter had someone pay for her lunch at drive through and she paid for the person behind her. She talked about how that made her day. Its contagious and we need more acts of kindness these days. Have a great week-end.

  6. I love the whole Pay It Forward idea. They have that here at Starbucks where you pay for the person's order behind you. It's a beautiful thing. I've always been a big softy especially when it comes to elderly people. Hey Slu, sorry about the house. Maybe next time? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

  7. Brilliant post Slu. I love acts of random kindness, it really does make my day. I once noticed someone crying and crying whilst I was out having dinner. I asked if she was ok and although she said yes, there was clearly something not right. I gave her a tissue and walked away but made sure that I paid for her whole meal without her knowing. And you know what, it's not about the money at all. It made me feel good inside, hoping that I might have at least put a smile on her face that day. I just love to do acts of random kindness. Your list has given me some great ideas too.

Ha, that one half inch was a joker so I'm glad you said NO. I'm praying that your house will sell and you'll get the right price for it too. Hang in there mate and have a great weekend.

  10. What an awesome post, Slu! Thank you so much for the reminder that an act of kindness doesn't have to be from our wallets. Financially, there's so many things I would like to do for so many people. But a quick glance at my bank account shows that I'm struggling just to care for my own family. But here you have given so many suggestions for non-monetary acts of kindness and I am going to challenge myself to do several each week!

I'm a BIG believer in paying it forward. You know, there's that whole Karma thing....and I have a lot to be grateful for. Thanks to people like you and Karen, it's nice to get a reminder sometimes of different ways to spread *kind*. Thanks.

Just wanted you to know that you're doing an act of kindness every time you stop by the blog. You always have something positive to say and it's usually delivered with a smile. For too many reasons, it means the world to me. Sometimes you don't realize the impact you make on others. i'm thankful for your kindness.
