Sense of Humor??? Check

Hey Yo:

So, a couple of weeks ago, Donna and I were sitting at the bar of our favorite Happy Friday hangout, Lupe Tortilla.  We were enjoying libations, good food, and having a nice conversation, as usual.  At one point, a lady comes up to me and says: "You must have a really good sense of humor."  My response was:  "Well, I would like to think that I do, but what makes you say that?"  Her answer was short and sweet...  Just two words:  "Your Shoes!"  Wow, my shoes???  Go figure.  And...  here are those shoes:

My Favorite 'Old Pair' of Vans

And Here...  My Sense of Humor on Display, Sans the Shoes:

My left leg, on the left, just below the knee...

The Reason...

So, last week, while at work, a few of the regular bus drivers were out sick or on a scheduled Field Trip.  When we are short on drivers for a shift, it sometimes means that I need to fill in and drive.  Gives me a chance to interact with the kids.  The particular route that I drove one afternoon last week had stops at a couple of Day Care facilities and at each of those stops, between 15 and 25 children get off of the bus.  The first stop was normal.  No problems as all the children exited the bus and got inside the Day Care.  The next stop was literally right 'next door' at a neighbor Day Care.  I pulled up to the stop location, in front of a huge window that is the 'reception' area near the front door, off to the side.  Immediately, the children began to file off of the bus.  At this stop, at least 20 to 25 kids had gotten up to exit.  And then...

Are You Kidding Me???

Kindergartners are always the first to exit because they are always seated up front on the bus.  After the first two or three kids got off, the next little boy was making his way off when his metal lunch box clanged with the step rail.  The lunch box came open and a container from inside the box hit the floor.  The lid from that container flew off and, well, now there was macaroni and cheese seemingly for as far as the eye could see!!!  Mac & cheese on the floor and across every step, all the way down.  Boooooooooya!!!  That little boy looked up at me and I looked right back at him and then I looked back at the 20 kids waiting to get off of the bus.  As I am looking at this huge mess on my bus, I realize that I HAVE to do SOMETHING and quickly.  I am also thinking to myself:  "Are You Kidding Me???"  I undo my seat belt, and tell all the other kids to hang on just a minute while I clean up the mess.  And a MESS it was.

Rha - Rho...

I grabbed the broom just behind my seat and the garbage can by the door and my plan was to sweep each step of mac & cheese into the garbage can, working my way down to the last step.  First, I had to maneuver down the steps to step off the bus.  There was about 18 inches, if that, between the edge of the bus and the curb from the walkway that led to the entrance, just to the right of the huge window.  As I turned to face the bus to be able to sweep the steps, my foot tangled with the curb.  And Down I Went!!!  And there I am, on my back, on the walkway, with a broom in one hand and a garbage can in the other hand, and looking up at 20 or so kids looking down at me.  And I'm thinking to myself:  I just fell in front of that huge office window.  They had to have seen me from inside and had a really good laugh.  I'm also thinking:  I hope they do not come out here and ask if I am alright "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up."  But, after a couple of minutes of making my way back up, feeling a bit of a sting on one of my legs, and starting to sweep, I am now thinking to myself:  Wow...  they did not come out here and ask if I was alright.  Yikes!!!

So, I completed the task of sweeping up the mac & cheese, got back in the driver seat, allowed the remaining kids to exit the bus, and moved on to my next stop.  And while driving, I had a good laugh...  at myself!!!  Because you know:  You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

Now...  the Good News - Bad News is:  at the end of the day and back at the office, I was telling the two or three people left in the office what had happened.  My Director immediately asked:  "What bus were you in?"  That is Code for:  Was there a camera on that particular bus?  It was an older bus without a camera.  So, no, I was not on 'Candid Camera.'  Sucks for them, works for me.  Sense of Humor???  Check...

My Parting Music:  I really like Billy D and The HooDoo's.  Donna heard them just the other night and liked them as well.  I have listed their music in this space before.  And this week, another tune from them.  ***Note to Donna...  You have not heard this one before.***  Please give a listen to:  Love Makes You Cry.  Enjoy...

A quick note:  (If I may)  Today is Good Friday...  Today, Tomorrow, & Sunday are very Special Days.  Enjoy your Easter weekend, but I urge you to remember the history of this weekend.  Thanks!!!

Much appreciation to everyone that took the time to stop by this week.  I hope to see you back next time.  Til then...

adios...  vaya con dios

  2. I have a son who's a skateboarder so I too have a pair of Vans, although mine are nowhere near as "good sense of humor" implying as yours.
Cannot believe that whole bus fiasco, but I love that you told the story. As you said, if we can't laugh at ourselves . . .

  4. Ha! I fell in my classroom last week - not the dainty kind of fall that makes everyone giggle a bit. Nope. The kind where you grunt with the impact, and there is dead silence because everyone thinks you just died. Yep. So - I see your road rash, and raise you one clicking hip! ;)

  6. I don't mean to be rude but I couldn't stop laughing, this is so funny. This story will be told amongst my friends too (sorry mate). I just pictured a big grown man, lying on the floor eyes to the sky looking for help from the dear Lord, and all those kids telling their parents that you delayed their day, ha ha ha ha.

As for the video, maybe there wasn't one on the bus, but who knows what was in the street, or those office buildings. If that was London, you would have been seen and YES, it should go viral. You could become real famous Slu

Really hope you don't mind, I've got a sick sense of humour sometimes, and I'm still laughing as I'm typing this out. :)
